Park Improvements & Beautification

We’re excited to share the incredible upgrades to George Petty Park, including a brand-new fence, benches, and more—thank you, City of West Palm Beach! These improvements are just the start of our efforts to upgrade, maintain, and beautify all five of our neighborhood parks.

After being temporarily closed for a city-commissioned construction project spanning several years, George Petty Park is officially reopening, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you! The playground has been restored, there’s a new dog-friendly play area, additional park benches, a little free library and a convenient dog waste bag dispenser to make visits more enjoyable.

Save the Date!

Join us for the Grand Opening Celebration of George Petty Park on:

We can’t wait to see you there as we celebrate this exciting milestone for our neighborhood!

Security Cameras

The city has approved a camera initiative to enhance neighborhood security. Tax dollars have been earmarked to operate and maintain these cameras starting in 2025.

SoSo has launched a fundraising campaign to support this initiative and has invited our neighborhood to participate. These cameras will benefit Prospect Park, Southland Park, and El Cid by monitoring key entry points from the Spillway to Okeechobee.

How to Help:

Crosswalks

El Cid is working with the city to install crosswalks on Washington/Flagler and South Olive. They’ve asked if we’d like to include suggestions for our corridor in their proposal. If you have ideas, please share them by Friday, November 15th.

Laura Rathlev is compiling a map of potential crosswalk locations.

Design District

SoSo has expanded its district to include parts of Georgia Avenue and is working on a Design District Map to highlight the area’s features.

Development

El Cid has taken a firm stance against the proposed development at 319 Belvedere and the Biba Hotel project due to concerns about parking, density, and height. They are planning a joint neighborhood meeting (date TBD) to discuss the broader implications for future development along S. Dixie Highway and the S. Olive corridor.

Washington Road

Sean recently met with Mayor James, who also walked Washington Road to review ongoing issues. The city is working on:

  • Road Repairs: Crews will be conducting pavement cores between Avila and Royal Palm to address failing sections.

  • Traffic Calming: New “No Parking” signs will be installed between Avila and Edgewood.

  • Flood Mitigation: Reviewing the installation of groundwater monitors between Washington and Olive.

  • Long-Term Planning: Sean presented a letter documenting the road’s issues, and updates will follow as we submit changes to the city.

Ongoing efforts with traffic calming measures are being led by Allen Shutt, Kelly Tabor, and Christina Lampert. Stay tuned for further updates.
